Two corrections officers were injured while confronting a prisoner who plugged a toilet and flooded a cell at the Anchorage Jail.
Corrections Department spokeswoman Kaci Schroeder tells the Anchorage Daily News by email that the inmate was intoxicated, unstable and mentally ill.
The man threatened to hurt himself and five officers went to the cell so it could be cleaned.
Schroeder says one officer suffered a head injury and another fell.
The Alaska Correctional Officers Association says officers struggling with the inmate rolled in water contaminated by feces and urine.
Union spokesman Brad Wilson says they showered at the jail but had to wear inmate socks and sandals. He says low staffing prevented them from going home to change.
Two officers were treated and released at a hospital.
