Kenai Borough Extends Lease for Modelers' Airfield
KENAI, Alaska -

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly has agreed to an extended lease for a piece of property that most people wouldn't want.

The Peninsula Clarion reports the assembly last week approved a 20-year-lease of the former Kenai Landfill site with Pacific Modelers Inc., which has created a miniature airport at the site for flying model airplanes.

The borough is giving the modelers a deal at the 31-acre site, charging just $1 per year.

Borough Mayor Mike Navarre says the group provides aeronautics training to Civil Air Patrol cadets and other interested youth.

Over the past 20 years, the modelers graded and seeded two 100-foot grass runways at the site.

Peninsula Modelers president William Topa says the facilities may expand to include an 80-by-200-foot racetrack for remote control cars.
