According to Anchorage police, last week's mail thefts are still under investigation.
As they continue, a U.S. postal inspector says there are certain measures people can take to protect their mail. The greatest precaution people can take, according to inspectors, is to always be on the lookout.
"Be prepared, look out for your box, look out for your neighbor's box," said Postal Inspector James Wilson. "We haven't seen a lot of this type of activity in and around the state of Alaska recently, which is greater in Anchorage, but sometimes they do happen."
Postal inspectors also say that people should know when their mail carrier arrives, and if you would like to take extra precaution, locked boxes are available for purchase.
Police say at least two checks have been stolen from mailboxes on the Anchorage Hillside. The checks were altered and cashed, resulting in thousands of dollars in stolen money.
