Reporter Austin Baird moved back to the Last Frontier in June 2013 to join the KTUU news team. He says, "the uniqueness of Alaska is what draws me back."
In previous journalism roles in the state, Austin covered the 2012 session of the Alaska Legislature in Juneau for the Associated Press, closely following on education policy and justice issues. His first job in Alaska was a newsroom assistant role for Alaska Dispatch in Anchorage.
Immediately prior to joining Channel 2 News, Austin completed a year-long fellowship in Raleigh, NC honing his journalism skills at the News & Observer. While at the newspaper, Austin focused on coverage of the 2012 political campaigns, as North Carolina was among the most hotly-contested states in the country. At the News & Observer, Austin covered an array of federal and state races as well as city news.
Austin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication, Journalism and Electronic Media from the University of Tennessee and is a native of Kennesaw, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta. He enjoys sports and closely follows the Vols and Braves. Music, especially blues and folk, is among his passions, as is travel.
Austin looks forward to traveling throughout the state of Alaska, sharing the stories of its residents, especially in rural areas across the state.
