Maria Downey has been with Channel 2 News since 1985. She is currently the Assistant News Director and anchor for the "News Hour" while she continues to report on top issues throughout the state, including consumer-related issues.
Maria was born in New York and spent the first 11 years of her life on Long Island. Her family then moved to Fort Lauderdale, where she lived until her move to Alaska in 1981. She is a 1980 graduate of the University of Florida in Gainesville, where she received a bachelor's degree in broadcast Journalism with a minor in political science. While attending school Maria was a reporter and anchor for the local PBS TV and radio station.
Maria was married to Ron Downey in 1981. They have been blessed with two children, Erin and Michael. The family enjoys just about everything Alaska has to offer and also enjoys traveling Outside.
The "extended" Downey family includes two horses, Macy and Wesley, and a sheltie named Sable.
Maria has received numerous statewide journalism awards throughout the years, along with regional and national honors for her investigative work in Alaska and stories that brought her to other nations, including Russia, Japan, Mexico, Ireland and Vietnam.
