Anchorage police have arrested a man who they say cut off his ankle monitor before fleeing to Hawaii.
According to a department release, police learned around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday that 32-year-old Joshua Leigh cut his ankle monitor off at a local hardware store and left the state on a flight to Maui, Hawaii.
A monitoring agency told APD that Leigh entered a local hardware store just before 9:00 a.m. He used a tool in the store to cut off his ankle monitor and left.
Leigh was awaiting trial on felony charges. A warrant was issued Saturday.
Investigating Leigh’s whereabouts, police learned he boarded a flight to Maui shortly after he cut the monitor off.
Police obtained an extraditable warrant and Maui police stopped Leigh at the airport in Hawaii when the plane landed. Leigh was sent back to Anchorage and was charged with violating the conditions of his release, as well as with criminal mischief in the third degree.
Police said Airport police, Maui police, Alaska Pretrial Services and the District Attorney’s office worked together to detain Leigh.
