An Anchorage man has been sentenced to 43 years behind bars for raping and assaulting a woman in his apartment in last year.

Deputy District Attorney Clint Campion wrote in a release Monday that 48-year-old Ronald McIntosh was sentenced for the April 2013 crime. His conviction comes after a three-week jury trial on charges of first- and second-degree sexual assault, as well charges of second-, third- and fourth-degree assault.

Prosecutors showed in court that McIntosh strangled the woman and struck her multiple times with his fists and a studded belt on the night of the crime. She escaped by climbing out of the window of McIntosh’s apartment.

A passerby on Old Seward Highway observed the shoeless woman flagging down cars at 1 a.m. and stopped to assist her. The assault was reported to Anchorage police. Detective Brett Sarber investigated the crime.

Court records show that McIntosh had been previously convicted of more than 30 crimes, including three felony theft and drug offenses. McIntosh will be placed on probation and required to register as a sex offender when released from prison.
