Elderly Woman Scammed of $2 million by former Anchorage nurse

ANCHORAGE -

Federal prosecutors say a 54-year-old former Anchorage nurse has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison in a case accusing him of bilking an elderly woman.

Prosecutors say Brian Ben-Israel was sentenced Thursday for stealing more than $2 million from the estate of Juanita Gielarowski.

According to prosecutors, Ben-Israel created a new trust with the help of a disbarred California lawyer, Philip Myers.

Ben-Israel, who later became an Atlanta resident, pleaded guilty in September to mail fraud, wire fraud, and filing a false tax return. Myers also pleaded guilty in September and is scheduled for sentencing in January.

Prosecutors say Gielarowski became destitute and was forced to live in a state-funded nursing home, where she died in 2010.

Ben-Israel's attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.
