ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

Anchorage police say a man barricaded in a Fairview residence has been safely taken into custody, following a Friday domestic dispute.

According to a message on APD's Twitter feed, posted at about 2:30 p.m., the man was taken into custody "without further incident."

APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro says police were called to a single-story multiplex building, on Karluk Street between 11th and 12th avenues, just before 8:15 a.m. by “a female stating that a man was inside her residence, they were having an argument and the man had a gun.”

Responding officers were met by the woman, who had left the apartment.
As of noon Friday, APD spokesperson Anita Shell says police believed the man was alone, but were uncertain whether he is actually armed.

"We have not made contact with him yet," Shell said. "We believe him to have a firearm per the statements by the girlfriend, but we aren't sure how many guns he has having not made entry into the home."

Shell said APD's SWAT team had surrounded the structure, with some residents in the area evacuated by police. No shots were fired, and no injuries have been reported.

Earlier Friday, Castro said she wouldn’t characterize the situation as a standoff, noting that the man hasn’t shown aggressive behavior.

“He hasn’t attacked officers,” Castro said. “He’s just a barricaded subject that may be armed.”

Police had formed a perimeter at the scene as they negotiated with the man. Shell said Karluk Street was closed between 11th and 12th, with police also blocking access to the vicinity of 12th and Juneau Street; drivers were asked to avoid the area.
