Employees at the Southside Animal Hospital received a shock Monday morning when an out of control Volkswagen Beetle crashed through the front windows, coming to a stop inside the lobby.

Veterinarian Pam May was one of the employees present when the car crashed through the windows.

“I was in an appointment and was giving a kitty a vaccine injection when the building shaking,” May said. “Then we heard a bunch of glass shattering and then an engine revving, and I assumed a car had come through the building.”

Like many who she observed moments after the crash, May said she was really shook up but uninjured.

“It was surreal; I can’t believe it happened,” she said. “Usually there are four people in the lobby. If the car had driven straight in, then things could have much worse.”

Anchorage Police Department officers were dispatched to the report, just after 9:27 a.m. According to police, officers found the vehicle had gone through the front of the building, as far as into the waiting area of the animal hospital.

Police say no injuries have been reported.

As for the animals, May said all seem to be as well as they were before the crash occurred.

The animal hospital will need to close for the next few days, May added. Employees were already working to inform pet owners of the incident so their animals could be retrieved till the hospital reopened.

APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro noted the female driver appears to be uninjured.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
