FAIRBANKS, Alaska -

Fairbanks North Star Borough officials want state lawmakers to kill a bill that would require the borough school district to join a state insurance plan.

The borough says it has a well-run school insurance plan now and costs will climb if it joins a state plan.

Senate Bill 90 sponsored by Wasilla Republican Mike Dunleavy aims to save districts money by pooling school insurance plans.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports state health care plan costs have increased 31 percent during the past three years.

The Fairbanks school district's costs have gone up 17 percent and the Fairbanks borough's have fallen 4 percent.

Borough human resources manager Sallie Stuvek says the borough self-insures and aggressively manages its health plans by negotiating with health providers and unions.
