APD Identifies Occupants in Fatal Mountain View Crash

Anchorage police have taken a man indicted in a deadly Mountain View SUV crash into custody Wednesday morning, crediting tips from the public with leading to his arrest.

APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro says Andre Clinton, 29, faces one count each of second-degree murder, manslaughter and third-degree assault in the crash. While details weren't immediately available on the exact circumstances of Clinton's arrest, he was subsequently taken to the Anchorage Jail for booking. Clinton was arraigned in Superior Court on Thursday.

According to the Anchorage District Attorney's office, the severity of the charges was related to Clinton's criminal history.

"It appears that he's been on notice as a result of his contact with the justice system, that he knows what the dangers of drinking and driving are and because he's aware of that, it heightens what we call the extreme indifference in the value of human life," said deputy district attorney Clint Campion.

A grand jury last week indicted Clinton on a second-degree murder charge.

Prosecutors say Clinton was behind the wheel of a Chevy Avalanche that flipped at about 2:15 a.m. July 12 on Commercial Drive in northeast Anchorage.

Prosecutors say his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

The crash killed 32-year-old Marcia Mausali, who APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro said was ejected from the vehicle along with Clinton. Medics took Clinton to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, while Mausali's sister -- 36-year-old Diana Mausali -- was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries.

According to court documents, Diana Mausali told officers all three of them had been drinking at downtown bars that night.

Clinton was convicted of driving under the influence in September 2012 and in July was driving on a revoked license.

Consuming alcohol was a violation of his bail condition on another arrest.
