Legislative Task Force Clashes Over Education Funding
Members of a legislative task force clashed over education funding as they worked on a blueprint for addressing education in Alaska.
The disagreement came over whether the House Task Force on Sustainable Education should include proposed language that, in the current budget environment, state education funding would need to be reduced.
Member Brad Keithley supported the statement, arguing the public needs to recognize the state is spending itself off a "fiscal cliff."
But Andrew Halcro said it made no sense to talk about cutting funding when the panel hadn't looked into investing in areas like pre-kindergarten that might cost more now but save later.
The language was revised during a Tuesday meeting to say the public should be made aware that education spending is not sustainable. Halcro voted in opposition.
