Mat-Su Borough Issues Air Quality Advisory
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

Mat-Su Borough authorities have issued an air quality advisory for the Matanuska Valley, effective as of noon Tuesday until high winds subside.

According to borough spokesperson Pam Graham, very strong winds from the north or northeast are expected by late Thursday or Friday. In addition, low to nonexistent levels of residual snow pack have increased fire hazards in the region.

“Through the Matanuska Valley there is also heightened risk of a prolonged period of blowing dust and silt,” Graham wrote. “Confidence that strong winds will develop is high, but there is still some uncertainty on exactly how strong they will be. Area residents and interested parties are advised that this pattern shift will likely persist well into the next week, with interior southern Alaska remaining largely on the dry side.”

All residents of the area are urged to avoid vigorous outdoor physical activity, with children and the elderly urged to stay indoors.
