[UPDATE Jan. 30 at 5:57 p.m.] Fairbanks Fire Chief Warren Cummings confirmed that a second body was found in the remains of the Geraghty Street apartment fire.

Cummings said the body was found "in the rubble of the building" after the fire. He said the identification of the two bodies is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Cummings said the all residents of the building are now accounted for after finding the second body, but firefighters continue to search the scene during cleanup efforts.

[STORY on Jan. 30 at 8 a.m.] Fire officials in Fairbanks say an apartment building fire has left one person dead, one man seriously burned and more than 50 people homeless.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Assistant Fire Chief Ernie Misewicz announced the fatality Thursday morning. The body will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage.

Several other people were treated for minor injuries after the fire early Wednesday morning gutted 18 apartments and a second-hand furniture store in the two-story building.

Firefighters dug for hours at the scene for any indication of unaccounted for occupants of two apartments. Misewicz said earlier there was a possibility someone else might have been in the building.

One man was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of his burns.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
