Sponsor: Proposal to Raise Alaska's Minimum Wage 'on Track'

ANCHORAGE -

A sponsor of a proposal to raise the minimum wage in Alaska says the effort is on track to meet its signature-gathering goal.

Ed Flanagan says about 31,000 signatures have been collected so far, with a goal of turning in about 43,000 signatures by Jan. 17.

Just over 30,000 signatures are needed to qualify for next year's ballot but qualified signatures must come from at least 7 percent of voters in at least 30 House districts.

Flanagan says signature-gatherers are still working to meet those requirements and want extra signatures, too, in case there are duplicates.

The initiative would increase Alaska's minimum wage from $7.75 an hour to $8.75 as of Jan. 1, 2015, then $9.75 as of Jan. 1, 2016
