Alaska State Troopers have confirmed that at least one man was arrested stemming from a traffic stop that caused the closure of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel into Whittier Sunday afternoon.
"We're still awaiting the official report from the arresting troopers," said AST spokesman Timothy Despain. "But it's our understanding that there was an accident caused during the incident."
The tunnel was closed for a few hours following a collision inside. One visitor to Whittier, Catherine Loffert, says she was unable to leave, while rumors abounded as to the reason why.
"Beautiful day in Whittier, but got stuck for couple hours due to an accident in tunnel," Loffert wrote. "Heard a vehicle was ramming other vehicles."
Despain confirmed that at least one individual was arrested in the tunnel, which has since reopened. Another suspect from the vehicle was transported to the hospital from the scene.
