ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

A search-and-rescue effort for a snowmachiner near Fairbanks early Wednesday ended with its subject safely behind bars, taken into custody on felony DUI charges by the Alaska State Troopers who found him.

According to a Wednesday AST dispatch, Fairbanks troopers were informed shortly after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday that 52-year-old Joseph Gauthier was lost. Troopers conducted a brief search involving Alaska Wildlife Trooper assets, finding him at about 2:20 a.m.

“(Gauthier) was in good health, however cold and tired,” troopers wrote. “Investigation revealed that he was highly intoxicated at the time he ran out of fuel. Further investigation revealed that he is currently on conditions of release in two open cases.”

Gauthier was arrested for violating conditions of release, as well as the felony DUI, and was taken to the Fairbanks Correctional Center without incident.
