Sharon Gibbons' family moved to Anchorage in 1964, when her parents were stationed at Fort Richardson.

Gibbons has stayed in Alaska since and has been an Eagle River resident for more than a decade.

The longtime employee of the federal Public Defender Office opposes two-term incumbent Bill Starr.

What is behind her campaign, she said, is her passion for public education and her desire to improve the quality of transportation in Anchorage. She is also sharply opposed to a proposed Eagle River dump.

"It's going to be a hazardous area," she said. "They're going to take items from JBER to this dump in this area. People are very concerned, and they want a voice. I want to be that voice."
