Shopping Spree Helps In-Need Children Get Back to School Clothes

With the new school year less than three weeks away, for most young ones getting new clothes is not a big deal.

But that wasn't the case for close to 100 children today who took advantage of a special shopping spree.

Most wouldn't think twice about buying a needed pair of shoes when they are at the store shopping. For sisters Dunia, Maria, and Naomi Rivero, getting the cute footwear is a treat, because for their family of eight, affording a special item doesn't happen very often.

Getting a few cool things is the least of their worries.

As part of the annual Target Back to School Shopping Spree, the Rivero's are part of a group of 100 children who each get $81 gift cards to buy new clothes for school.

For some, it is clothing desperately needed.

"We had some who needed socks literally because they have holes in their socks and they are down to their last pair," said DeAnna Roering who works for the Salvation Army of Alaska.

Simple items we take for granted, that volunteers say will help make the difference in how kids feel and how they do in school.

"Am I able to pay my rent, or do I want to focus funds on buying the kids school clothes,” Roering said. “So we want to help alleviate that situation a little bit.”

"Clothes are obviously essential but sometimes you don't always get to do the fun things," said Kjersti Arnold, who is a shopping spree chaperone. "Fun things like getting the fun sneakers they bought."

It's the fun things like shopping, Dunia is happy about because she and her siblings are getting the chance to buy new clothes, just like everyone else.

"I'm so excited I want to shout out," Dunia said.

The Salvation Army of Alaska says a total of 300 children in need from Anchorage and the Mat Su Valley will be able to get new clothes for the school year.
