ANCHORAGE -

The Channel 2 Sports countdown of the top stories of the year countdown has reached No. 4 on the list:

No. 4: UAA Removes Steve Cobb as AD

Following another disappointing Seawolf hockey season, it was clear a change was coming at UAA.

First coach Dave Shyiak was fired, and then athletic director Steve Cobb started feeling the heat.

Lines were drawn and sides were taken as the story played out over a number of weeks.

Gov. Sean Parnell wrote a letter to University of Alaska president Pat Gamble requesting action over UAA-related headlines surrounding the program. The UAA Hockey Alumni Association issued vote of no confidence in Dr. Cobb.

A group led by Don Winchester and Steve Nerland responded by calling for people to "stand up" for UAA Athletics and to support the embattled AD, pointing to his many successes with Division 2 programs.

Cobb's supporters were unable to overcome an increasingly disgruntled hockey community that had not seen a competitive team since before Cobb took the job.

Cobb was removed, and following a nationwide search, he was replaced by Keith Hackett who now leads the athletic department.
