The Bartlett hockey team picked up its first Cook Inlet Conference win since what is believed to be the 2007-08 season with a dramatic 5-4 overtime victory over East on Tuesday night. The win had ironic timing as Bartlett parents were recently considering a petition to the Anchorage School District to have players cut from other CIC schools join their shorthanded roster.
Bartlett has been playing with eight skaters and two goaltenders, but it hardly mattered against the T-birds.
Joel Johnson scored a hat trick for Bartlett, including two shorthanded goals 41 seconds apart in the third period to give the Golden Bears a 4-2 lead. East's Noah Willis was able to force overtime, however, on a 6-on-4 goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation.
In the thrilling overtime period, Bartlett's Cody Bell scored from close range off an assist from Johnson to end Bartlett's agony.
The Golden Bears improve to 1-2-0 in league play, while the T-Birds fall to 0-1-1.
