Seawolves Prevail In New Coach's First Game
The UAA hockey team won its season debut and first game under new head coach Matt Thomas, downing 10th-ranked Quinnipiac, 3-1 on Friday night to open the Seawolves' season opening tournament at Sullivan Arena. The visiting Bobcats provided a good early season challenge for the Seawolves as the NCAA runner-up last season.
The Seawolves scored twice in a span of 3 minutes, 23 seconds in the first period on goals by freshman Hudson Friesen and sophomore Blake Tatchell. Brett Cameron, who missed a large chunk of last season with a broken collarbone, also tallied for UAA early in the third to extend UAA's lead to the eventual 3-1 final.
UAA also played responsibly at the other end of the ice, allowing just 25 shots on goal. Rob Gunderson made 24 saves to collect the win in net.
In Friday's other tournament contest, UAF defeated Air Force, 6-1, with Nolan Huysmans setting the tone with a goal 12 seconds into the game. Cody Kunyk added two goals for the Nanooks.
The two Alaskan schools switch opponents for Saturday's games. UAF will take on Quinnipiac at 4:00. UAA will then take on Air Force at 7:00.
