Victory Over Vegas Is Alaska's 9th Straight In Playoff Series Openers
Jordan Morrison scored twice and the Aces buried three goals in a game span of two minutes, 36 seconds as Alaska opened the Kelly Cup Playoffs by throttling the Las Vegas Wranglers, 5-1 in game one of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Alaska, which led the 21-team ECHL this season with a mark of 45-19-7, takes a one game to none lead in the best of seven series.
Nick Mazzolini added a goal to open the scoring at 12:13 of the first period and furnished one of his two assists on Drew MacKenzie's tie-breaking goal at 18:01 of the frame. The Aces led, 3-1 after the first. Brett Findlay also contributed a pair of assists.
For the game, Alaska outshot Las Vegas, 40-20. Gerald Coleman, the only hold over from Alaska's 2011 Kelly Cup championship team, got the start in net and made 19 saves.
The Aces have now won nine consecutive opening games of a playoff series. Their last defeat in a game one came back in the 2009 Kelly Cup Finals, a series Alaska lost to South Carolina.
Game two of the series is Saturday night at Sullivan Arena.
