White Powder Prompts State Building Evacuation

A spokesman for the state emergency management division says the State Office Building in Juneau will remain closed until authorities determine the identity of a suspicious white powder.
Jeremy Zidek says a Juneau hazardous material team is collecting the powder, which will be shipped to the state public health lab in Anchorage for testing.
He says he doesn't want to raise an alarm, noting Alaska has seen many of these white-powder incidents, and all have come back negative for hazardous materials. But he says caution is exercised in every situation.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Sean Parnell said the building was evacuated after employees on the building's 11th floor opened a package Friday morning containing what she called suspicious white powder. She did not know who the package was addressed to.
